Schengen Visa Peak Season 2026 — Processing Times & What to Expect
Every year from April to August, Schengen visa applications from India spike dramatically. Summer holidays, school breaks, and favourable European weather drive a surge in travel plans. The result: longer processing times, appointment backlogs at VFS, and anxious applicants on Reddit and WhatsApp groups.
Here's what the data tells us about peak season 2026, and how to navigate it.
When does peak season start and end?
The usual pattern for applications from India:
- Early peak (April-May): Applications for summer travel start flooding in. Processing times begin to stretch.
- Full peak (June-July): Maximum backlog. Wait times are at their longest. VFS appointment slots are hardest to get.
- Late peak (August): Volumes start declining, but the backlog from June-July is still being worked through. Processing times remain elevated.
- Recovery (September-October): Volumes drop. Processing times start returning to normal.
- Off-season (November-March): Usually the quietest months for applications.
How much slower is peak season?
We started tracking in June 2026, in the middle of peak season, so we can't yet compare peak with off-season from our own data; we'll add that once we have a full year. What we can show is how long each country is taking right now:
As of 20 Oct 2026, the fastest Schengen visas from India are France (about 4 days), Norway (about 4 days) and Spain (about 4 days). The slowest are the Netherlands (about 37 days), Italy (about 25 days) and Croatia (about 22 days). These are median waits across all Indian visa centres, from 203,340 passport dispatches we've tracked.

Median and 90th-percentile wait from application date to courier dispatch, for applications made 45–90 days ago. All Indian visa centres combined; countries with fewer than 30 such applications are left out. Live numbers, updated several times a day: compare countries.
Embassy staffing doesn't scale with demand, so when applications surge, the wait usually grows.
Practical tips for peak season applicants
1. Apply as early as possible
Schengen visa applications can be submitted up to 6 months before your travel date. If you're travelling in July, apply in January or February when the off-season speed is still in effect. Waiting until May means joining the peak queue.
2. Consider less popular countries
If your itinerary genuinely has no single main destination, check which embassies are quickest right now in the table above. Smaller countries aren't automatically faster: some of the busiest embassies from India are among the quickest. See our country comparison for details.
3. Apply from a smaller VFS centre
Delhi and Mumbai VFS centres are the most congested. If you're within jurisdiction of a smaller centre (Kochi, Chandigarh, Lucknow), you may find it easier to get an appointment and potentially faster processing. Read more in our city comparison guide.
4. Book your VFS appointment early
During peak season, VFS appointment slots fill up weeks in advance. Start checking for slots 2-3 months before you plan to submit. Some centres release new slots at specific times — visa forums can help you find the pattern.
5. Submit a complete application
Incomplete applications get held or returned, adding weeks to your timeline. Peak season is not the time for shortcuts. Double-check every document against the embassy's specific checklist. Common mistakes:
- Bank statements not covering the required period (usually 3-6 months)
- Missing hotel bookings or flight reservations
- Cover letter that doesn't clearly explain the itinerary
- Photos that don't meet ICAO specifications
- Travel insurance with insufficient coverage or wrong dates
Monitor processing speed in real time
Use VisaTrackr to see exactly how far each embassy has processed. Our tracker shows the processing frontier for 23 countries across 18 Indian cities, updated several times a day. You can see whether processing is speeding up or slowing down and estimate when your application date will be reached.
The silver lining
Peak season is stressful, but the data shows that processing speed is not constant — embassies work through surges, and frontier dates can jump forward significantly in a single week. Keep checking, and don't panic if the queue looks long today. Most applicants get their visas in time for their trips.
