Which Schengen Country Processes Visas Fastest from India?

August 2026·6 min read

If your Europe trip covers multiple Schengen countries, you get to choose which country's embassy to apply through (the rule is: apply at the embassy of your “main destination” — the country where you'll spend the most nights). But when your itinerary is flexible or split evenly, the processing speed of different embassies becomes a real factor.

We track passport dispatches for 23 Schengen countries from Indian visa centres. The ranking below comes straight from that data and is recalculated every time the site is updated, so it reflects what embassies are doing now, not a yearly average.

Fastest to slowest, right now

As of 20 Oct 2026, the fastest Schengen visas from India are France (about 4 days), Norway (about 4 days) and Spain (about 4 days). The slowest are the Netherlands (about 37 days), Italy (about 25 days) and Croatia (about 22 days). These are median waits across all Indian visa centres, from 203,340 passport dispatches we've tracked.

What the ranking tells you

Application volume isn't the whole story. Some of the busiest embassies from India turn visas around quickly, while some that see far fewer applications are slow, so check the table rather than assuming a smaller country will be faster. Rankings also move: an embassy that is quick this month can slow down when summer demand builds or staff change.

Speeds also differ between visa centres for the same country. Each country's page shows the wait at every centre, from Delhi and Mumbai to the smaller ones.

Can you game the system?

The Schengen visa rules say you must apply at the embassy of your primary destination. If you're spending 4 nights in Paris and 3 in Amsterdam, you apply at the French embassy, not the Dutch one — even if the Dutch are faster at the time.

However, there are legitimate ways to optimise:

  • Flexible itinerary? If you're visiting 3 countries for 2-3 nights each, you can structure your trip so the fastest-processing country is your main destination (most nights).
  • Transit country: If you're transiting through a Schengen country, you may be able to apply there if it's your first point of entry and no single country dominates your stay.
  • Business trips: If you have business in multiple countries, the country of your primary business meeting is your main destination — even if you spend more tourist nights elsewhere.
Don't misrepresent your itinerary. Embassies share data, and getting caught applying at the wrong embassy can lead to a rejection.
