Germany Visa Processing Time from India in 2026

September 2026·5 min read

Germany is the busiest Schengen destination from India for business travel and one of the top three for tourism. The German embassy handles a very high volume of applications, which means processing times can swing significantly between seasons.

Current processing time

As of 20 Oct 2026, Germany visas from India are taking a median of 7 days at VFS Delhi, 6 days in Mumbai and 6 days in Bangalore, based on 59,178 passports we've seen dispatched by BlueDart. Half of applicants get their passport back sooner than the median.

Why Germany processing varies

The German embassy is known for thorough document verification. Several factors affect your processing time:

  • Application volume: Germany receives more visa applications from India than almost any other Schengen country. Peak season creates a backlog, and waits grow with it.
  • Visa type: Business visas with proper company invitation letters often process faster than tourist visas. Conference and trade fair visas (common for Germany) may get expedited handling.
  • Document completeness: The German embassy is particularly strict about financial documents. Inconsistencies in bank statements or ITR can trigger additional verification.
  • Travel history: Applicants with prior Schengen or Western country visas typically see faster processing.

Documents required for German visa from India

Key documents for a German Schengen visa application:

  • Passport with at least 3 months validity beyond return date
  • Schengen visa application form (signed)
  • Two passport-sized photos (biometric, 35mm × 45mm)
  • Travel medical insurance (€30,000 minimum coverage)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Hotel booking or invitation letter with host's ID copy
  • Last 3 months bank statements (savings account preferred)
  • Last 3 years ITR or Form 16
  • Cover letter with travel purpose and itinerary
  • Employment/business proof (company letter, registration, etc.)

How to track your German visa status

VFS gives you a reference number when you submit your passport, but their portal only shows a vague "under process" status. Our tracker monitors public courier dispatch data to show exactly which application dates the embassy has processed.

Visit the Germany all-cities tracker to see the current processing frontier. Once your application date is reached, your passport has likely been dispatched — use your VFS reference number to track it on BlueDart.

Tips for faster processing

  1. Apply early: Book your appointment as early as the rules allow (up to six months before travel), and leave at least the “9 in 10 within” time for your centre in the table above.
  2. Check your centre: You normally have to apply at the centre that covers where you live, so look up that centre's current wait rather than the all-India figure.
  3. Complete documentation: Double-check every document. The German embassy rarely calls for additional documents — they either approve or reject based on what you submit.

Summary

The current German wait at every VFS centre is in the table above, and it changes week to week. Bookmark the Germany tracker to monitor progress, and submit well ahead of your travel date.
