How Long Does a Schengen Visa Take from India in 2026?
If you've submitted your passport at a VFS Global centre for a Schengen visa, you're probably refreshing your email every hour. VFS shows you “under process” and nothing else. The embassy gives a vague “15 working days” estimate. Reddit is full of people asking the same question you're asking right now.
We built VisaTrackr to answer this question with real data, not guesswork. Here's what we found.
How we track processing times
When VFS dispatches your processed passport back to you, it goes through BlueDart courier. The BlueDart reference number follows a predictable pattern based on the country, city, and application date. By checking these references against BlueDart's public tracking system, we can determine exactly which application dates have been processed.
We check thousands of references every day across 23 Schengen countries and 18 Indian cities. This gives us a real-time picture of how far each embassy has processed.
What the data shows
Processing times vary a lot by country. This table is recalculated from our dispatch data every time the site is updated:
As of 20 Oct 2026, the fastest Schengen visas from India are France (about 4 days), Norway (about 4 days) and Spain (about 4 days). The slowest are the Netherlands (about 37 days), Italy (about 25 days) and Croatia (about 22 days). These are median waits across all Indian visa centres, from 203,340 passport dispatches we've tracked.

Median and 90th-percentile wait from application date to courier dispatch, for applications made 45–90 days ago. All Indian visa centres combined; countries with fewer than 30 such applications are left out. Live numbers, updated several times a day: compare countries.
Volume isn't a reliable guide: some of the busiest embassies from India are among the quickest, and some small ones are slow. Check the country comparison for the latest numbers and each country's page for the wait at your own centre.
Why processing times vary
There are several factors that affect how long your visa takes:
- Season: Demand from India builds through spring into summer, and waits tend to grow with it. We started tracking in June 2026, so we can't yet show how winter compares.
- VFS centre: The same embassy's wait can differ between centres. Each country's page shows every centre side by side.
- Application quality: Complete applications with strong documentation (bank statements, travel history, solid cover letter) move through faster. Incomplete applications get sent back or held for additional verification.
- Embassy staffing: Embassies have limited visa officers. During holidays (Christmas, national days), processing can pause entirely.
How to check your specific status
Go to the VisaTrackr homepage, select your country and city, and look at the “processing frontier” — the latest application date that has been dispatched. If your application date is before the frontier, your passport has likely been dispatched already (check BlueDart). If it's after, you can estimate how many days until your date is reached based on current processing speed.
Tips to speed things up
- Check your own centre — you normally have to apply at the centre that covers where you live, so plan with that centre's current wait.
- Apply early — you can apply up to six months before you travel, and leaving room for the slower cases (the “9 in 10 within” column above) is safer than planning around the median.
- Submit a complete application — missing documents cause delays. Double-check the specific embassy's checklist.
- Compare countries honestly — if your itinerary genuinely has no single main destination, the table above shows which embassies are quickest right now. Don't misrepresent your plans to pick a faster one.
